Yakima North Front Street Historic District Renovation
We helped the City of Yakima, the North Front Street Improvement Association and local business owners create an actionable renovation plan for downtown’s historic Old North Yakima. This area is home to unique infrastructure that reflects the City’s railroad roots at the turn of the 20th century. The project identified conceptual design improvements to stimulate economic development and preserve the district’s character while integrating proposed railroad grade separations for safety and mobility. The design recommendations were based upon historic streetscape elements and local activities and included historic lighting, sidewalk replacement, street furniture, signage, public art, street trees and restoration of original brick street pavers and vault lights. The renovation plan was used to secure funding for stimulating reinvestment in Old North Yakima. Vacant buildings have been reoccupied and new businesses have moved in. The district now hosts local festivals and visitor attractions.
