TPCHD Healthy Communities Planning Toolbox
We worked with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) to develop a Healthy Community Planning Toolbox to assist the County’s 24 jurisdictions in integrating health into their 2015 Comprehensive Plan Updates. This toolbox was requested by the Pierce County Growth Management Coordinating Committee (GMCC) in response to increased awareness of the relationship between community health and the built environment. We designed the toolbox to be relevant and scalable for jurisdictions of all sizes and levels of interest in health and planning. The toolbox specified six intervention areas with example tools for each area, and described policy interventions to achieve built environment changes that produce healthy community outcomes such as increased access to opportunities to be physically active and to obtain affordable healthy foods. The toolbox also included example health policy and code language, performance measures, research findings, graphics and logic models showing how tools improve community health.
