Chambers Creek Properties Master Site Plan and Implementation Strategy
Begun in 1995, the Chambers Creek Properties Master Site Plan transformed a working mine on the Puget Sound waterfront into ball fields, play areas, 10 miles of urban nature trails and the Chambers Bay Golf Course, host of the 2015 US Open. The master site plan was developed through six 3-day public workshops, which built consensus on the future use of the property and site plan details. A three party Procedural Agreement among the Cities of University Place and Lakewood and unincorporated Pierce County developed a unified permitting process for the Chamber Creek Properties. Principal Julia Walton was the master site plan project manager and provided continuous service to Pierce County for 15 years. Her last project at Chambers Creek was the pedestrian overpass to the beach, which opened in 2010. The project won the 2004 National American Planning Association Award for Parks and Public Lands.
