King County South Transfer Station Site Selection

We worked with King County Staff to develop and implement a comprehensive public outreach program for identifying a large site to host an essential solid waste facility serving South King County. The site needed to be undeveloped with minimal conflicting uses and access to a major roadway. To meet these requirements we engaged multiple jurisdictions, regulatory agencies, community organizations, neighborhoods and business interests. This included chartering a Siting Advisory Committee and supporting them in conducting a methodical and open evaluation process to reach a shared decision. We facilitated multiple public meetings and developed speaking points, press releases, newspaper ads, flyers and displays detailing potential site alternatives and describing the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process. We provided targeted outreach to traditionally underserved populations, working with interpreters to translate key information into three foreign languages.
